Let’s be honest—getting kids ready for family photos can feel like herding cats in cute outfits. Between wardrobe meltdowns, snack requests, and that one sock that’s suddenly itchy, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be stressful (and you don’t need to pack an entire candy store in your purse to get smiles)!
At Diapers and I Do’s Photography, I’ve seen it all—and I’ve learned a few tried-and-true tips to help your kids show up relaxed, happy, and totally themselves (bribe-free!).
1. Set the Tone (With Excitement, Not Pressure)
Instead of saying “You have to take pictures,” try:📣 “We’re going to have fun and play with the photographer!”Kids feed off your energy. If you’re relaxed and excited, they will be too. Keep the mood light, and avoid putting pressure on them to be “perfect.”
2. Let Them Help Choose Their Outfit
For younger kids, give them 2–3 pre-approved outfit options to choose from. When kids feel involved, they’re more likely to cooperate—and way less likely to protest what they’re wearing on shoot day.
📸 Bonus: Bring a backup outfit just in case (accidents happen!).
3. Feed Them First (and You, Too!)
Hungry kids = cranky kids. Make sure everyone eats beforehand and bring along clean, dry snacks (think puffs, pretzels, or fruit snacks—nothing messy or sticky). Hydrated, full bellies = more cooperative littles.
4. Bring a Familiar Comfort Item
A favorite stuffed animal or small toy can work wonders for helping kids feel safe and relaxed. Sometimes, we’ll even include it in a few shots—it becomes part of the memory!
5. Let Them Move!
I never expect kids to sit still the whole time—and you shouldn’t either! Some of the best photos come from real interactions: running, spinning, snuggling, or even playing tag. I’ll guide the session with fun prompts to keep things moving and natural.
6. Skip the Bribes—Use Praise + Play
Instead of offering rewards, lean into praise:💬 “You’re doing such a great job!”💬 “I love how you’re smiling with your brother!”Making it a game (“Can you find a flower to show me?” or “Let’s twirl like ballerinas!”) keeps kids engaged without pressure or sugar crashes.
7. Trust the Process
Please don’t worry if your child gets shy, silly, or even a little wild—that’s normal! I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve and always work at your child’s pace. You focus on being present and loving on your people—I’ll handle the rest.
Family sessions aren’t about stiff poses or forced smiles. They’re about real, honest moments—giggles, snuggles, and the kind of love only your family can create. The “imperfect” moments are often the ones you’ll treasure most.
